WINNIPEG, MB – The Dauphin Kings took a 2-0 series lead on Sunday night while the Niverville Nighthawks, and Portage Terriers both tied their respective seven-game series at 1-1 in the first round of the McMunn & Yates Turnbull Cup Playoffs.
Nighthawks 6 Flyers 1 | Best-of-seven series tied 1-1
Sean Williams scored twice while Austin Dubinsky turned aside 33 of 34 shots in a big 6-1 win on home ice for the Nighthawks in game two. Matteo Speranza popped the top off of the Niverville CRRC in the opening minutes of the first period when he scored a shorthanded marker on a wraparound.
After Dawson Zeller and Sean Williams gave the Nighthawks a 3-0 lead, Jayce Legaarden would score his first of the postseason for the Flyers to cut the deficit to 3-1 heading into the third period. Niverville would score three more times in the opening ten minutes of the third and secure a 6-1 win in game two to tie up the series at 1-1 heading back to Winkler for game three on Tuesday night.

Kings 3 Wolverines 1 | Kings lead best-of-seven series 2-0
Gavin Nemis recorded the game winner mid-way through the third period while Cole Sheffield was solid in the Kings crease, stopping 27 of 28 shots to help Dauphin earn a 3-1 victory, and a 2-0 series lead over the Waywayseecappo Wolverines.
After Wolverines forward, Dylan Duzan opened the scoring in the second period, Matthew Thomas responded for the Kings to tie the game up at 1-1 heading into the third. Nemis scored to give the Kings a 2-1 lead which would give way for the MJHL’s regular season goal scoring leader to net his first of the playoffs, giving Dauphin an insurance marker that would hold up to give the Kings a 3-1 victory. Game three is set for Tuesday night in Dauphin when the Wolverines will try to avoid going down 3-0, while the Kings look to take a stranglehold of the series.

Terriers 3 Pistons 2 | Best-of-seven series tied 1-1
Terriers captain, Park Scherr notched the game winner thirty seconds into the second period while goaltender, Mitchell Kathler made 35 saves to help secure the 3-2 win over the Pistons, tying the best-of-seven series up at 1-1.
Decker Mujcin opened the scoring in game two on an unassisted shorthanded marker that would give the Terriers an early lead. With under six to play in the first, Mathis Laplante tied the game up with his first of the playoffs, before Breck Hirrschoff regained a one-goal lead for the Terriers. Scherr would score early in the second while Brayden Berg would cut the Terriers lead to 3-2, but that would be all as Kathler would turn aside all 14 shots in the third period to help Portage hold on to a 3-2 win in game two. Game three is set for Tuesday night in Steinbach.
