Strong effort gives MJHL win in opener over SJHL

WARMAN, SK – Waywayseecappo Wolverines forward, Dru Mushumanski scored twice while Niverville Nighthawks Goaltender, Raiden LeGall stopped 26 of 28 on the way to help Team MJHL to a 4-2 win over Team SJHL on Tuesday night.

It was a quick start for Team MJHL who came out of the gate with speed to burn. Dauphin Kings defenseman, Matthew Thomas, found the top corner of the net from the point with the lone assist going to Steelers forward, Remy Hlady.

Under two minutes later, Flyers defender, Blake Matheson scored when he jumped on a loose puck at the top of the circle and found the top corner. It was another Selkirk Steelers player chipping in with the helper as the MJHL’s leading scorer, Owen Warnick got the lone assist.

Connor Miller responded for Team SJHL just moments later on an unassisted marker to cut Team MJHL’s lead to 2-1.

Team MJHL would be forced to kill off an early SJHL powerplay in the second period, but would find pay dirt. Wolverines, Dru Mushumanski took a quick feed from Marlen Edwards of the Blizzard, and ripped a shot low blocker to give Manitoba a 3-1 lead.

Just like they did in the 1st, Team SJHL found a quick response as Rylan Williams beat Raiden LeGall to cut the SJHL’s deficit to 3-2.

Three minutes later, Mushumanski found some puck luck and scored his second of the game on a shot that banked in off of an SJHL defender to give the MJHL a 4-2 lead heading into the final twenty minutes.

In the 3rd period, Team MJHL would have a few opportunities on the powerplay, but just couldn’t connect. Team SJHL would pull their goaltender for the extra attacker but time would run out and the MJHL would seal the deal and take a 4-2 win.

The Western All-Star Showcase wraps up on Wednesday with one final meeting between the MJHL and SJHL, with puck drop set for 11:00 AM CST.
